I don’t know who I am.
The realization hit me hard like a rock thrown at my head as I got up one sunny morning in a compact, hotel room.
I don’t know where I am. I don’t know what I’m doing here. I don’t remember anything.
The hotel room was small and cramped, with various objects cluttered about. A laptop was on a desk in the corner. A balcony led out, and showed a spectacular view of green mountains and a stunning blue lake. I got off the bed I was sitting on, and examined the mess of objects around me. A hairbrush lay on the floor, near my feet. A small suitcase was leaning against a closet. There was a door to my left that I was sure was an exit, and a door in front of my that I was sure was a bathroom. A pair of shoes lay by the door, and a small pink doll was on the floor. A pile of books stacked near the bed. I turned my attention to myself. I was wearing a long blue sequined shirt and a pair of jeans. I realized something was in the pocket of my jeans, and pulled it out. A small crumpled up piece of paper was inside. It was wet, however, so I couldn’t do much since it was too wet to read. I could make out the word “lake” and “mountains,” and a strange combination of letters in numbers which I couldn’t read since it was too wet.
I walked towards the small laptop on the desk. I opened it, and it whirred to life. A small dialogue box in the middle said “Username,” and below that, “Password.” I didn’t know what the Username and Password was, so I closed the laptop.
I cautiously opened the door to the left. A small hallway led to the left and right, and there were many doors all through the hallway. Leaving the door to my room open, I journeyed through the hallway until I reached the elevator. I was about to press the button, when a voice in my head said, “Don’t.”
I didn’t understand it. It wasn’t like a conscience, just a clear voice in my head. It wasn’t like I had thought it, because I hadn’t. Suddenly I heard a small bang in the hallway. I ran to my room. The door was wide open, and I had only left it narrowly open. I ran inside. The laptop was gone.
